Prague’s national museum is a polythematic institute with five specific departments.
The Natural History Museum, The Historical Museum, The National Museum Library, The Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures, and The Czech Music Museum.
The fossils, anthropological artifacts, relicts and stuffed animals presented give the museum a somewhat conservative touch, but even if it’s only for the architecture, this neo-Renaissance building is definitely worth a visit.
It was opened in 1893 and reminds the uninformed visitor so much of a government building that even the Soviet army was fooled during their invasion of 1968, as a result they started firing on this stronghold of culture. If you look closely at the columns you can still see the shell marks.
Apart from the permanent exhibition, the museum arranges several temporal exhibitions.
Since the different departments have specific opening hours and admission fees, please check the museum’s website for detailed information.
