Students.

Prague is not only a tourist magnet but also one of the favourite destinations in Eastern Europe for many Erasmus and other international students. There are several universities, colleges and academies in Prague.

The most important are; the Charles University (Karlová Univerzita), the oldest in Central Europe, consisting of 17 faculties and offering 270 different study courses (BA, MA and PhD) and the rich in tradition Czech Technical University (České vysoké učení technické), established in 1707. However there are also other colleges such as the Czech University of Life Science, the Institute of Chemical Technology, and academies of performing and fine arts.

The first and most important question after enrollment is: where to stay? In Prague there are four residence halls, nevertheless just two are designated for the accommodation of foreign students. The placement occurs through the Charles University. You can also look for a room in a shared flat, either in daily newspapers or on the internet.

It is recommendable to open a Czech bank account as there it is the most convenient way to pay your bills and there is no fee for withdrawing money. As a student of the Karlová Univerzita you can open a free account (either with a credit card or an EC card) at the Czech bank Česká spořitelna.

Furthermore it is advisable to get a Czech SIM card. The charges are reasonable and all providers offer prepaid SIM cards.

The costs of living in the Czech Republic in general are lower than in Western Europe. A room in a student’s residence will cost around 100 Euros, a meal at one of the university canteens little more than 1 Euro (edible but not necessarily very tasty), a 3 months ticket for the buses, trams and the metro around 20 Euros approximately.

The public transport in Prague is one of the best in Europe and will get you to every place you might want to go, day and night.  It is obvious that as a student you should avoid going out in the touristic areas as the prices are excessive. The rule is: the closer to the centre, the more expensive.

There are many restaurants, bars and clubs and surely everyone will find something after their fancy nonetheless you should miss going to a Czech restaurant and to one of the Jazz Clubs or the famous Czech brewhouses (pivnice).
